Large Sweet Chestnut bark container
A very special one off piece of barkcraft a type not often seen for sale. These take a lot of preparation and time to create, but now and then I do like to take the challenge to recreate objects seen in publications documenting past cultures.
Its a flat bottomed container made from one solid section of inner bark of the Sweet Chestnut tree, and stitched together with hand made Lime bast cordage.
Size is 20 x 16 cm across the oval of the top edge, and over 24cm in depth. My carving knife is for scale adjacent in the pictures. Small holes are filled with Pine resin and charcoal in a couple of spots as traditionally these were also waterproofed to be used as a bucket. This one isnt waterproof though, and is more for storage, or you could use it for demonstrating historical craft work. I just like looking at them tbh and there are wrench to let go, but I have to free them eventually!
